Wheel Throwing

Wheel Throwing

You will learn tips and techniques involved in centering your clay on the wheel, throwing a piece in various shapes & sizes, and trimming the bottom.

Techniques

Techniques

I will demonstrate the various surface decorating, form altering, and component combining techniques I use. I will also focus on what you need to complete your specific piece.

Glazing & Firing

Glazing & Firing

You will learn about a variety of glazes, a little bit of the science behind them, how to choose the one that will best suit your piece. Every 6 weeks there will be one bisque firing and one glazing firing.

Where & When

Bedford Boys Ranch upstairs in the Art Council Northeast building, across from the theater.

Classes are Monday or Thursday evenings, 6:15 to 9:15pm. You can take one or both classes per week. I accept students whenever I have openings. No blocked out session schedules to follow.

How It Works

Class sizes are small, usually 4 students per class. That means lots of individual attention, but availability is tight. Spots are on a first come first serve basis, and classes fill up quickly.

I like to start everyone throwing on the wheel, working individually with each student using a hands-on approach to get each student a good start on the wheel. Then, depending on your experience with clay and/or your interests, we can go in a myriad of directions from basic throwing to more advanced design, hand building, slab, coil, you name it.

We will cover different types of clay, glazing and firing. Our work is mostly mid-fired to cone 6 electric in a kiln 24x24x24”. (We will go over what that means, too.) You will have at least one piece of pottery completed, beginning to end, for your first six weeks. As you advance in successive classes, your production speed will go up. If you catch the “bug” you can become one of our ongoing students.
